Saints Girls wrestling 2011/12

Girl’s wrestling is one of the fastest growing sports in California with over 1,500 girls participating in the 2009-10 season. Because of this growth the California Interscholastic Federation State level created girl’s regional and state tournaments. Santa Ana has had only one or two girls participating over the past several years. In 2009, one girl changed all that.
In 2009, Junior, Lizette Tenorio won the Girl's CIF Southern Section Championship and the Girl’s CIF State Wrestling Championship at 237lbs. Lizette becomes Santa Ana High School's first State Champion for wrestling in its 120 year history.
As a senior in 2010 Lizette captured the Girls CIF Southern Section Championship again, and placed 3rd in the Girls CIF State Wrestling Championships. She went on to place 2nd in the nation at the Girl’s Folkstyle National Championships in Oklahoma.
Lizette is also a 2x Golden West League Champion in Shot Put and Discus for the Saints Track team. She was voted Santa Ana High School and the Golden West League Athlete of the Year for girls’ sports. We are very proud of her accomplishments. She has trail blazed the way for other girls in the sport of wrestling at Santa Ana High School giving them hope that they too can be champions.
After Lizette, more girls started to join the wrestling team. In 2010-11, the Saints produced their first official Girl’s Varsity Wrestling Team with 10 athletes. With a lot of hard work and dedication, 6 of the girls placed at the CIF Region and qualified for the State Meet. This earned enough points for the team to take 7th at the Regional Tournament. They met with more success at the State Tournament with all six making it to the second day. It was a tough second day with three losing matches to place. Joselyn Parada had a good day and placed 8th becoming the 3rd ever Girl’s State Placer for Santa Ana. The Saints scored enough team points to place 17th in the entire state. All six girls are underclassmen and will be returning next season.
